Turning on FaceTime

Many people are using iPhone 4. But so many of them do not know about the FaceTime function. It allows people with FaceTime on their Mac or iPhone to videocall each other. Voice quality is very good. You need to be on wifi though.  But you need to turn on your FaceTime function on your iPhone so that others can call you. To turn on the FaceTime function on your iPhone, go to Settings, Phone and On FaceTime.

FaceTime with iPhone 3GS

I was looking for a solution to do FaceTime with my iPhone 3GS. The only setback is that you you do not have a front camera to fully enjoy the FaceTime experience. But still, you get good call quality over wifi and the back camera works.

This is only for jailbreaked iPhones. I have this working on my iPhone 3GS running iOS version 4.2.1. See steps below.

  1. Go to Cydia > Manage > Sources.
  2. Tap on Edit > Add.
  3. Key in this source – http://apps.iphoneislam.com/ Tap on Add.
  4. After the source has been added, search Cydia for FaceIt-3GS-4.2.1
  5. Install the package.
  6. Exit from Cydia.
  7. Go to Settings > Phone > FaceTime > On.

Now, you can use FaceTime on your iPhone 3GS. Please feel free to comment if you have any questions.

iPad 2

iPad 2 is now official! Featuring a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip and additional camera on the front, now you can FaceTime. The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, and an advertised battery life of 10 hrs.

720p video recording at 30fps will be on tap from the rear-facing camera, which can also do a 5x digital zoom. The front camera records at a more modest VGA resolution, also at 30fps.

The iPad 2 comes with a new cover. Basically, it’s a magnetic flap that protects the front and automatically wakes and puts the device to sleep with the help of the proximity sensor according to whether it’s open or closed. Seems like they are not free though. The Smart cover will cost $39 in plastic or $69 if you opt for leather one.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor measuring 8.8mm, and a little lighter at just over 600g. You have a choice of  between white and black. The iPad 2 starts shipping on March 11 2011.

Apple is launching the new iOS 4.3 for the iPad 2. The same rules apply. If your old iPad was jailbreaked, do not update to the latest iOS if you would like to keep it jailbreaked though you may miss the FaceTime since the new iOS 4.3 comes with FaceTime and Photo Booth. The minimum compatible version of iTunes for the new iPad 2 will be the freshly released 10.2.

Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1

This jailbreak has been proven to work on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad. I used GreenPois0n for this jailbreak. Make sure you have iTunes 10.1.2. The firmware version on your iPhone should be 4.2.1 (8C148a)

Step by step to jailbreak.

  1. Download GreenPois0n. Click here to download GreenPois0n.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer. (Close iTunes if it pops up.)
  3. Switch off your iPhone.
  4. Double click on GreenPois0n. (Click on no if it asked if you are jailbreaking Apple TV.)
  5. Click on jailbreak.
  6.

  7. Wait for the timer and then press and hold on the sleep button (which is also your power button).
  8. Follow the timer and then press and hold on the Home button while still holding on to the sleep button.
  9.

  10. Follow the timer and then release the sleep button while still holding on to the  Home button.
  11. You may see that GreenPois0n says complete on the jailbreak window.
  12. Keep holding the Home button. It will take a while. So be patient. You will see the screen turns black with 3 lines of text and then hang there for a while. And then followed by a whole page of text running through. Do not panic. Keep holding on to the Home button.
  13. Until you see the iPhone restart. You will see the Green Pois0n logo.
  14. You can now let go of the home button.
  15. Start your iTunes if it does not start. (This step is important. If you miss this, it will put you back to DFU mode or show failed on the jailbreak program.)
  16. If you managed to go through the restart step, you will see a green icon called Loader when the iPhone starts up. Click on it to install Cydia. (You must be connected to wifi to do this.) Your iPhone is now jailbreaked. Enjoy!
  17. If the jailbreak fails, just connect the iPhone to your PC and switch it off and repeat the above step.

Feel free to comment if there is any questions.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak for 4.1

I did my jailbreak for my iPhone 3GS which is on iOS 4.1 using Limera1n which has been released for all iOS devices including: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 3G, iPad running iOS 4.1, and iOS 3.2.2 respectively. Please note that this only jailbreaks your phone but does not unlock it. If your phone needs unlock, make sure you know what you are doing. My iPhone is an unlock set. Which means it can work with any sim without any modification.

For a step by step guide after downloading Limera1n, please click here. In any case if it does not work, fret not. Just try it again. I did it a couple of times while jailbreaking for my cousin. Sometimes you missed the timing when they asked you to press and hold the home and power button etc. Just make sure that you backed up all your data already before starting with the process. Good luck and enjoy!!

iPhone 4 Antenna Issues

The heat is ongoing for the antenna issue faced by iPhone 4. It’s in the magazines, morning news etc. Consumer Reports, the influential magazine for product reviews, does not recommend the iPhone 4 because of reception problems it said were caused by a design flaw.

Consumer Reports’ engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception,” the magazine said on its website, ConsumerReports.org.

“When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone’s lower left side — an easy thing, especially for lefties — the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you’re in an area with a weak signal,” it said.

Notice that they mention that the problem arise in places with low signal and only when you hold it with your left hand. Though this is undeniably a flaw in some way, but its harder to find a place with low or no signal than strong signal. Many iPhone 4 users commented on the above flaw and said they have no problem with the phone especially when they used it with a cover. See comments on website by following the link below.

Apple said that it promises to issue a free software patch to resolve the issue that has already triggered lawsuits. Apple also denies that reception problems were due to faults in its new antenna system, which is incorporated in the casing.

Consumer Reports, however, did mention that the iPhone 4 performed well in other areas.

“It sports the sharpest display and best video camera we’ve seen on any phone,” it said, and “outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats.”

Optical Zoom or Digital Zoom?

Digital cameras are marketed with specifications of UP TO 10X or 20X zoom. But is that really true? Well, they are not lying. But the truth lies in the Optical Zoom.

Digital zoom make use of in build software to digitally enlarge the image thus obtaining higher zoom range. The end result of a photo taken with Digital zoom is just like a photo that you have taken without any zoom and enlarged on your computer with a crop. You lose image details as there were not as much pixels captured but rather enlarged pixels to fill the aspect ratio. And one thing about Digital zoom is that its more prone to producing blur image.

Optical zoom uses the lens of the camera (the optics) to bring the subject closer. Normal compact cameras usually have only 3-5X optical zoom. So when taking shots, try to use only Optical zoom. Normally, your camera will show a zoom range on the LCD when you take a picture ans when it starts to zoom further into a red range, you will notice that the image is not as sharp as before and looks grainy. In this case, the camera is moving into Digital zoom. You can choose to switch the Digital zoom off in the menu. “Digital Zoom: ON/ OFF”.

Why is Optical zoom better? Optical Zoom enables you to capture an image with more clarity which allows you to have a bigger print size without the image appearing grainy. If you want to keep clarity in your images, use only optical zoom whenever possible, and avoid digital zoom.

So what happens if you don’t have enough zoom to take that image? Use your legs and walk nearer to it. And if it’s not within your reach, then you have no choice but to use Digital zoom. But in my opinion, it isn’t any good if the image is not sharp. Look for something to shoot that is within your Optical zoom range or where you can walk nearer to take a sharper image.

Syncing Your iPhone

I once downloaded about 10-20 apps on my iPhone from Installous over wireless over a period of about 2 weeks without backing up (syncing with iTunes). When I finally decided to do a backup, something happened. As it was syncing and about to finish, someone called me and the backup was interrupted. As the files are all rather big and it will take a while to backup, I figured out that I should put my iPhone in airplane mode before syncing so as to prevent any interruption.

Go to Settings > Airplane Mode > On. You can also do this if you would like your iPhone to search for network without restarting your iPhone. Just switch on and off airplane mode and it will automatically search for network signal.

Error Viewing Root Folder of iPhone

I was learning to modify some themes which requires me to SSH into my iPhone. I was using iPhone Browser and when I tried to view my root folder, it says “Sorry, you need a jailbroken device to view the root partition”.

Even though my iPhone is jailbreaked. I got the above error msg. Go to Cydia and install “afc2add“. I was able to connect to the root partition after installing this package.

If you are not able to find the package after searching, try to find it in the ModMyi.com’s source.

Sleep mode for your iPhone

Many of us often like to listen to some music before going to sleep. But where is the sleep mode in iPhone or iPod Touch? We used to have like 10, 20 or 30 minutes sleep mode in our MP3 player. Now for your iPhone or iPod Touch etc, you can go to Clock and then Timer. Tap on “When Timer Ends” and you will see the below image.

Tap on “Sleep iPod” and then choose the number of minutes you would like before putting your iPod to sleep. Then tap on “Start” before you exit the timer. Now you can always enjoy some nice music before going to bed. You will be relieved to find out that your iPhone or iPod Touch still has quite a bit of battery left for the day when you wake up.
