Turning on FaceTime

Many people are using iPhone 4. But so many of them do not know about the FaceTime function. It allows people with FaceTime on their Mac or iPhone to videocall each other. Voice quality is very good. You need to be on wifi though.  But you need to turn on your FaceTime function on your iPhone so that others can call you. To turn on the FaceTime function on your iPhone, go to Settings, Phone and On FaceTime.

FaceTime with iPhone 3GS

I was looking for a solution to do FaceTime with my iPhone 3GS. The only setback is that you you do not have a front camera to fully enjoy the FaceTime experience. But still, you get good call quality over wifi and the back camera works.

This is only for jailbreaked iPhones. I have this working on my iPhone 3GS running iOS version 4.2.1. See steps below.

  1. Go to Cydia > Manage > Sources.
  2. Tap on Edit > Add.
  3. Key in this source – http://apps.iphoneislam.com/ Tap on Add.
  4. After the source has been added, search Cydia for FaceIt-3GS-4.2.1
  5. Install the package.
  6. Exit from Cydia.
  7. Go to Settings > Phone > FaceTime > On.

Now, you can use FaceTime on your iPhone 3GS. Please feel free to comment if you have any questions.

iPad 2

iPad 2 is now official! Featuring a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip and additional camera on the front, now you can FaceTime. The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, and an advertised battery life of 10 hrs.

720p video recording at 30fps will be on tap from the rear-facing camera, which can also do a 5x digital zoom. The front camera records at a more modest VGA resolution, also at 30fps.

The iPad 2 comes with a new cover. Basically, it’s a magnetic flap that protects the front and automatically wakes and puts the device to sleep with the help of the proximity sensor according to whether it’s open or closed. Seems like they are not free though. The Smart cover will cost $39 in plastic or $69 if you opt for leather one.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor measuring 8.8mm, and a little lighter at just over 600g. You have a choice of  between white and black. The iPad 2 starts shipping on March 11 2011.

Apple is launching the new iOS 4.3 for the iPad 2. The same rules apply. If your old iPad was jailbreaked, do not update to the latest iOS if you would like to keep it jailbreaked though you may miss the FaceTime since the new iOS 4.3 comes with FaceTime and Photo Booth. The minimum compatible version of iTunes for the new iPad 2 will be the freshly released 10.2.

Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1

This jailbreak has been proven to work on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad. I used GreenPois0n for this jailbreak. Make sure you have iTunes 10.1.2. The firmware version on your iPhone should be 4.2.1 (8C148a)

Step by step to jailbreak.

  1. Download GreenPois0n. Click here to download GreenPois0n.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer. (Close iTunes if it pops up.)
  3. Switch off your iPhone.
  4. Double click on GreenPois0n. (Click on no if it asked if you are jailbreaking Apple TV.)
  5. Click on jailbreak.
  6.

  7. Wait for the timer and then press and hold on the sleep button (which is also your power button).
  8. Follow the timer and then press and hold on the Home button while still holding on to the sleep button.
  9.

  10. Follow the timer and then release the sleep button while still holding on to the  Home button.
  11. You may see that GreenPois0n says complete on the jailbreak window.
  12. Keep holding the Home button. It will take a while. So be patient. You will see the screen turns black with 3 lines of text and then hang there for a while. And then followed by a whole page of text running through. Do not panic. Keep holding on to the Home button.
  13. Until you see the iPhone restart. You will see the Green Pois0n logo.
  14. You can now let go of the home button.
  15. Start your iTunes if it does not start. (This step is important. If you miss this, it will put you back to DFU mode or show failed on the jailbreak program.)
  16. If you managed to go through the restart step, you will see a green icon called Loader when the iPhone starts up. Click on it to install Cydia. (You must be connected to wifi to do this.) Your iPhone is now jailbreaked. Enjoy!
  17. If the jailbreak fails, just connect the iPhone to your PC and switch it off and repeat the above step.
