What is Jailbreak? – iPhone

Jailbreaking is basically modifying the iPhone’s firmware so that you can get access to the internals of its operating system and therefore allowing you to install many other  third-party applications that are not available on the App Store on your iPhone.

Jailbreaking your iPhone doesn’t make very much of a difference in the operation  part of it. But it does gives you a new meaning to owning an iPhone. Thanks to all the developers.

The good thing about jailbreaking is that there are many useful and interesting applications available through other channels available to you that will never make it to the App Store due to SDK restrictions.

The bad thing to it is that it makes people think that their warranty will be void if they jailbreak their iPhone. While it may be true that your warranty would be void if you send a jailbreaked iPhone to Apple for repair, you can actually restore your iPhone to factory default before sending it to Apple.

Many people are very sceptical about doing it as they are not familiar with the whole process. During the OS 1.0 -2.0 days, I would admit that it’s a hassle to do a jailbreak and iBrick (meaning your iPhone is bricked and cannot work anymore), is often heard of and a majjor concern. But the jailbreak for OS 3.0 and above has been super easy and I have not met any unsuccessful attempts since doing it. To jailbreak your iPhone, click here to read my other post.

To date, I have jailbreaked about 10-15 iPhones on OS3.1.3. Many of my friends can’t believe that its that simple. Done in a matter of minutes and a couple of clicks. Those who have jailbreaked will never look back. OS4? I will wait till its jailbreaked before upgrading!

iPhone Sync Cable Won’t Charge

I recently bought a third party iPhone Sync cable for use at my office so that I don’t have to bring my original iPhone cable to and fro. Everything works as normal with the third party cable. But the thing is it will not charge when connected to a pc or laptop. It can sync. But it won’t charge. If you would like to use it to charge, you will need to connect it to the usb of the power adapter.

So I left the power adapter and third party cable in my office solely for charging and leave the original cable at home for synchronising and charging when connected to my PC.

iPhone 3Gs or 4G?

iPhone 4G has already been announced. It’s a really stunning new piece of gadget. The greatest improvement in my opinion is the flash for the camera and the beautiful display screen. I have been approached by friends who are going to buy an iPhone if they should wait for iPhone 4G. Recently, I have been introducing a lot to my friends who are using the stock iPhone 3Gs to go for jailbreak. And they have been happy since then.

Because of this, it would not make sense (in my opinion) to wait for 4G‘s release before getting an iPhone. It will take a long while before available for sale. And most important of all is jailbreak. It will take another long while after launching for jailbreak to be available for the iPhone 4 which is on OS4. The iPhone 3Gs lives up to its name for speed. Its good enough for me now but I will still drool at the iPhone 4G. One important if you decide to get an iPhone already is to go for at least a 3Gs. The iPhone 3G is much slower when compared to the 3Gs.

Transparent Icon for Your iPhone

iBlank is an application that allows you to easily create blank/transparent icons. This is useful when you would like to do custom modding for your iPhone. You can download this from Cydia.

When you launch the app, you will be able to select the number of blank icons you will need. Simply tap on the required number and it will be created for you. Do note that the higher the number, the longer it will take. But its not really too long. You will then get a pop-up saying that the icon has been successfully created.

Tap OK and then hit your Home Button. Your iPhone will respring and you will have a blank icon on your SpringBoard. If you are having trouble finding your blank icon, just make your icons wiggle (tap and hold any icon until they all start wiggling). You can then find it because you will see a space with an x in the top left corner but no icon. Like the picture below.

Installous Connecting But Not Downloading.

Installous Error Downloading – I have been trying to download an app which I wanted. It’s a Singapore & Malaysia GPS map. I went through all the steps of searching for the app and downloading it in Installous. When I finally got it, it just shows the app connecting but nothing is being downloaded. After a good while, it gives you an error message “Download Failed“. I tried it many times and its always the same error. I tried many ways to try to get it working such as restarting the iPhone, uninstalling Installous and reinstalling it. Nothing helps.

As I just restored my iPhone and jailbreaked it. I have not downloaded anything from App Store. I noticed that after I download something from App Store (just any free app), and then download from Installous, it downloads. This works. I thought it might be mere coincidence. But another day when I met with the same error, again I tried to install a free app and then download from Installous – it works! I cannot really explain what is the reason behind this and if this is a real solution. But after that 2 times, my Installous has been working since. Do note that you should take good care not to let your iPhone go go to sleep (esp when downloading apps with large file size) while downloading otherwise the connection will fail and you need to redownload. Good luck!!

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 – Untethered

I used Spirit to jailbreak my iPhone on a Windows platform. Whether you are on 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.2, this jailbreak is for you. Please note that if you have used Blackra1n to jailbreak your phone already, you will need to restore your iPhone before you can use this to jailbreak your phone. This jailbreak rocks because its UNTETHERED. That means you don’t have to connect your iPhone to the computer and “Make it Rain” everytime you need to restart your iPhone. The following requirement should be followed before proceeding with the jailbreak.

  • Your iPhone should be on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
  • An activated device: one that is not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
  • Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
  • You are recommended to sync with iTunes before proceeding so as to keep a backup of your most recent datas.

Once you fulfill the above requirement, you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone. Below is a step by step tutorial.

Step 1: Click here to download the latest Spirit Jailbreak software for Windows to your desktop.

Step 2: If you are a Windows 7 user, right click on the Spirit.exe icon and select ‘Properties‘. Under the ‘Compatibility‘ tab on the Properties window, enable the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” checkbox and select ”Windows 98/Windows ME” from the dropdown list.

Once done, click ‘Apply‘ and ‘OK‘ to close the window.

Step 3: Double click on the Spirit.exe icon to launch the application.

Step 4: You will now be prompted to connect your iPhone.

Step 5:
Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer and click on ‘Jailbreak‘.

Step 6: The Spirit application will now start the jailbreak process. Once done, you will be prompted to ‘Quit‘ the application.

Step 7: Press the ‘Quit‘ button. Your iPhone will now reboot to show the progress indicator below. This will take a while so be patient.

Step 8: Once the process is completed you should be able to see the Cydia application installed on your iPhone‘s Home Screen. Your iPhone is now successfully jailbroken.

Note: If you’re having any issue with Wi-Fi or network connectivity on your iPhone after jailbreaking it then try to reset network settings (Launch Settings->General->Reset then tap “Reset Network Settings”) to resolve the issue.

Error Adding Source http://cydia.hackulo.us

I restored my iPhone. I have tried almost 10 times trying to add this source in Cydia. I keep getting the same whole bunch of error.

Cache failure.

Error: Refreshing Data.

Failed to fetch

z Cached Failure

You keep clicking okay and in the end, the source is not added.

I managed to add this source by installing Rock from Cydia. After installing Rock, go to Manage Source >Edit > Add source. Type in http://cydia.hackulo.us and it will be added within 3 seconds. Cool!!

iPhone – Camera App Missing

I just found out today that your camera app can go missing even if you did not jailbreak your iPhone. Normally for those who have jailbreaked their phones, we can hide applications which we seldom use. But if you have not done any jailbreak and you do not have many apps, your camera app can still go missing. You go to “Search” and type in ‘Camera”. No results too. How can that be? See below for the solution.

Go to Settings > General > Restrictions. Then turn your camera from off to on. You may be prompt for a Passcode if you did set one for your phone.

Windows 7 – Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

I have been having this issue on and off. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit. Many times when I open my Download Folder, the window will pop up with the above error Windows Explorer has stopped working. Window is checking for a solution to the problem….”. But it has never returned with a solution for me. There are many other solutions which other net users have offered. The one below is what solved my problem. It works for me! Do give a comment if you find it useful.

Go to your Internet Explorer browser > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab

Tick Off – Enable third-party browser extensions (See Pic below)
